The Human Rights of Indigenous People as Workers The history of indigenous people on this continent and the world over for that matter is one of freedom of movement, trade, barter, and not withstanding human conflicts a relationship of commonality and peaceful coexistence. Enter the Europeans and their invasions, colonization, genocidal wars, and exploitation. Throughout the duration of a 521 year occupation of our continent indigenous humans have suffered primarily as a consequence of being used for labor power to extract and turn over to the occupiers all of the wealth from our natural resources and this includes the value of our labor kept by the colonizer. This led to a vast removal of our ability to provide for ourselves and gave the invaders the ability to not only control our lives and destiny but send what they stole back to their homeland and enrich their kings & queens. It also gave them the power to build and maintain a powerful empire right here on our own land artificially known as the so-called “Americas”. From 1492 to the present the European strain of the human family has been able to, in a major way, develop and solidify the structures of empire here and globally exactly because indigenous people on this side of the world have made that possible as a result of a forced exploitative, abusive, and uneven financial relationship between oppressor and oppressed. How has this been possible? What gave them their mandate or their so-called legal right if any to invade, colonize, exploit, and kill others to gain total control over land, resources, and other human beings? To understand the history of slavery, feudalism, capitalism, colonialism and imperialism we must look directly to what they have codified into law that their deep belief in white supremacy created. Now as then, they establish and maintain their rule and false power over others through a superiority complex and belief that their God gives them the “divine right” to rule. In our history classes it is taught that this is called “Manifest Destiny” but what is not taught is that this comes from a much more sinister law they created known as the Doctrine of Discovery. Through this doctrine they believe they are destined to rule over all of humanity and that their God gives them the right to establish ownership over the earth and everything they touch. This in simple language is a belief or a system of beliefs codified into canonical law that is rooted in white supremacy. It is the psychological fuel and vehicle that normalizes, gives life to, and carries on colonialism as we know it. In all of the major European enslaving countries such as England, France, Spain and Portugal there is a long and deep tradition and belief in the worship and subservience to kings and queens. These so-called “Royals” with the deep backing and support from the world’s most powerful churches, especially the Vatican, created the Doctrine of Discovery through Papal law which basically in their minds gives them the right to total domination over people and lands outside of their jurisdiction (i.e. our hemisphere). Thus, these ruling European families or “Royal Crowns” sent out their armies, henchmen, criminals, thieves, and murderers in every direction of the earth and for the past five centuries have raped and pillaged mother earth and her indigenous children. Today, there is a political, economic, military, and spiritual loyalty to these kings and queens by the entire power structure and their representatives in Canada as a colony of the British Crown, in the U.S. as a pseudo colony of the same crown, and in Mexico, Central America, and South America as pseudo colonies of the Spanish branch of the royal family crown. This has led to the Doctrine of Christian Discovery manifesting in current policy through NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement), CAFTA (Central American Free Trade Agreement), and the WTO (World Trade Organization) as the governing body overseeing, implementing, and legalizing the economic system of exploitation through wage slavery. Since the business and military agents of the royal families occupying our lands and territories can no longer control labor through open slavery they have established powerful international organizations and governing bodies that develop legal methods to successfully seek through so-called “immigration reform” to establish global guest worker programs thereby legitimizing theft under the guise of free-trade and sanctioning the practice of human servitude. This has been rightly called “Transient Servitude”. The WTO has developed and is developing massive infrastructure and international guidelines for this transient servitude program that serves as guidelines for participating countries on a national level. The Doctrine of Discovery is their original law establishing the divine right to rule and every single one of the military, economic, financial, and political agencies, parties, and organizations promote, preserve, and enforce it both knowingly and unknowingly. Today’s immigration issue is intimately intertwined and connected to this doctrine. To overlook this connection in our attempt to dismantle white supremacy, colonialism, and imperialism would be a grave mistake. As indigenous people trying to develop a collective continental strategy to free ourselves and humanity from the death grip of white supremacy and everything Europeans have done to legalize and institutionalize it in order to continue their enslavement of the human race and mother earth because they are convinced that they have a “divine right to rule” we must see the Doctrine of Discovery and labor exploitation as one. It would be a serious mistake if we do not take the fight and struggle in the national courtrooms to dismantle white supremacy out onto the international battle field and put an immediate stop to the WTO and render NAFTA and CAFTA null and void. This is where and when we begin to expand our movement and tie our struggle into the struggle of the international working class in the fight to overcome racism and eliminate capitalism and imperialism thereby getting on with our evolution, protection, and preservation of mother earth. If the 5,125 year galactic alignment of 2012 teaches us anything it is that the indigenous people of the earth will lead the way in this struggle. As we see today in the struggle of our brothers and sisters in Canada in resistance to the colonial control of the British Crown and that ugly queen, we will not remain idle in our attempt to break down the structures of white supremacy and empire both regionally and globally in order to assert our right to self-determination with regard to not only our territorial jurisdiction but to our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Together we must coordinate and compliment our efforts continentally to ensure that our laws, our treaties, and our way of life is acknowledged, accepted, respected, and protected for all eternity. Why Should we Choose Not to Vaccinate?

WHY SHOULD WE CHOOSE NOT TO VACCINATE? The subject of having ourselves and our infants vaccinated is a very heated and controversial one. Some argue that vaccines are necessary, safe, and effective while others including highly educated doctors argue that vaccines are very dangerous, unnecessary, and ineffective. But do we really know who is right and wrong? Do we simply believe that it is ‘a little bit of both’? Do we ever ask ourselves if what we’ve been advised to believe by the medical industry, the media, and society really true and can we trust them when there’s profit motive involved? Aside from the controversy, it may be possible to find common ground in the agreement that all of us ultimately want what is right for each other, especially our children and we would like to see them grow up to be extremely strong and healthy. In that spirit, what this mailer will attempt to do is bring light to the topic of vaccinations by providing unheard of and uncommon information to some of the more prevailing questions people may have such as: Are vaccines truly safe and effective? What is the liquid made up of that they inject into our bloodstream? Is that liquid dangerous to our health and does it suppress the immune system? Do vaccines cause cancer and mutations in our genetic cells? How do they affect our body’s vital organs and nervous system thus emotions & behavior? Are vaccinations only a ploy in our money driven society to keep people sick in order to make billions of dollars off of medications and shots? My wife and I wrote this paper as part of a research project that we embarked upon when our first son was born in 2004. We were highly concerned about the pain that Western medicine through their common so-called “care” would subject our son so early on in life to upon arriving in this world through things like circumcision and vaccinations. This innately instinctive response to protect our newborn lead us to use our education to study these so-called “normal” things they do to children and in doing so our whole belief system was shaken to the core. This was the beginning of a very informative and intriguing educational journey that has changed our lives forever and we thank our kids for this. What’s more is that we have come to the conclusion that we cannot remain passive by keeping this new found knowledge to ourselves and so we have made a conscious decision to share it with you and the community. It has not been easy. When this paper was first issued we had many very angry parents who criticized us. It was a bit shocking because the criticism was not so much about the contents of this paper but our decision to share our knowledge with others. These people were upset because they did not ask for us to tell them these things and felt that we had no business telling them that vaccinations are deadly. We understood where this anger was coming from. Our understanding comes from having many experiences as activists with people who are dismissive without question, without research, without reading further into or about subjects that challenge the established order of things. This is always happening to us but what keeps us moving forward, especially with challenging the idea of vaccinations is that we try to remember what an important thinker who we honor greatly once said, “people are not making a statement about me they’re making a statement about themselves. The idea that they can come to definite conclusions about something without even looking at it… I mean, do you claim to be in control of your own mind? It is not my job to persuade you. I don’t want to persuade you. The point is that there is a gathering mass of evidence to support this information. You have a conditioned mind that can be reconditioned if you so choose. But any conditioned mind that says, “I am not going to look at the evidence. I’m just going to dismiss it because it is so different”, is a conditioned mind that is unbelievably imprisoned while thinking it is free. We are given a conditioned reality that is so different from what’s actually happening that the gap, that chasm between what we’re conditioned from cradle to grave to believe is reality, the movie screen and what’s going on, is so great that many people can’t make that leap and that’s not by accident that’s by design.” This is important to remember with regard to vaccines especially in our current fear driven world. It concerns us greatly that people are dismissive without question particularly now with everyone rushing to get a FREE Flu shot and encouraging others to do the same. We should take a step back and ask questions, share information, and allow knowledge to rein supreme not fear. Please try to keep an open mind. We do not want to increase any fears that anyone may have. This is not our intention. As parents we have made a genuine attempt to study, discuss, read, research, and honestly debate this issue with others especially since we have had to make courageous decisions, sometimes against traditional advice from professionals, family, and friends where the health and well-being of our sons Kinan & Illimani is concerned. We do not take this matter lightly. It is not a joke. We have thought long and hard about sending this information out to all of you and as you can tell we decided to go ahead and share what we’ve learned with you and hopefully it will make all of us more informed and aware. We would like to begin by listing some of the ingredients that are in vaccines: • Formaldehyde – (a carcinogen – a cancer causing substance and agent) Used in embalming fluids, it can cause allergic reactions on both an immediate and delayed (later in life) hypersensitivity basis, leading to potentially chronic immune system problems. • Prenol – (also a carcinogen) May cause paralysis, convulsions, coma and necrosis and gangrene (both are forms of the death of living tissue) • Aluminum Phosphate – A toxic heavy metal that causes brain damage. It is found in a wide range of vaccines and has been associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other nervous system disorders. • Antibiotics – Used to prevent bacterial contamination but have the potential to sterilize the entire human body and destroy all of the healthy bacteria necessary for digestion and assimilation of foods, the prevention of diarrhea, and all healthy immune system responses. Antibiotics have been traced to being the cause of severe allergic reactions. Hay fever, asthma (an immune system disease), eczema, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia (pain disorder characterized by tenderness and stiffness of muscles and connective tissue), multiple sclerosis and psoriasis have all been associated with vaccines and bad food. Interesting that if our doctors advise us to keep certain irritating foods away from kids who have these conditions doesn’t it also make sense for our doctors to advise us to choose not to expose our kids to shots that have ingredients that can cause these conditions? Instead, they prescribe all sorts of over the counter medications, inhaler’s, pumps and pills that poison, pollute, and clog our bodies up with toxins that further break down our natural and most powerful immune system. • Foreign Genetic Material (Chick, Monkey, & Human Tissue from Embryos) – Cells used in the production of vaccines by growing (culturing) the material on the cell-lines of aborted fetuses or organs. This is dangerous because by injecting other animal tissue/cells into our body there is a risk of infestation of the shot by various viruses that can be transferred to us that the animals may have. This can cause deadly diseases in us and can have such a long latency period (waiting or storing itself in our body tissue before showing up as a deadly disease or symptom thereof) that trying to make a connection to receiving a vaccine as a baby or child is almost impossible to detect. Once injected into an infant, the virus could stay dormant for many years, only to surface at age forty as brain cancer…words of wisdom to those who would say, “my child and I both have been vaccinated and we turned out just fine”. A virus can infect any cell in our body and cause malignant transformation: In other words, a virus can change a healthy cell into one that is malignant (cancerous). • Thimerosal – a preservative containing MERCURY. This particular toxic heavy metal has been the subject of all of the current articles in the L.A. Times and other leading publications seeking to provide information that convicts vaccine companies for knowingly putting extremely high amounts of this for years in shots. It is a dangerously deadly poison and has been found to be the cause of toxic build up in the body & brain that leads to mental retardation, Down Syndrome, Attention Deficit Disorder, autism, strokes, tumors, convulsions, and death. In Fact, the destruction and poisoning of our children’s bodies has been happening so much to so many people that the Federal government along with various health departments have had to set up a special billion dollar fund for compensation to families who have suffered from poisoning. With the help of basic definitions like this explaining what is in the liquid that is injected into babies & adults through shots, we can begin to get an idea of just how important it is as parents to be armed with knowledge in order to make better choices to protect ourselves and our children by opting-out-of vaccine programs or saying NO to those who try to make us believe that so-called ‘immunizations’ are absolutely required for us to be able to be totally protected from sickness, disease, and death. None of us have to go to medical school or be doctors to know this. After further researching the subject on your own you will find that vaccines are against natural processes and impede our body’s natural ability to fight off disease. Furthermore, the strong chemical ingredients in shots suppress and weaken our extremely powerful natural immune system which in turn actually makes us more susceptible to diseases. You’ll also come to know that it is not a coincidence that vaccinated children suffer more from infection, colds, ear infections, and allergies than unvaccinated children. In little children vaccines also cause the brain to swell. During the period after the vaccines are administered, brain swelling increases and children often prematurely lose their soft spot in their cranium because the blood brain barrier is not fully developed. This is believed to be one of the reasons that unvaccinated children walk sooner, talk sooner, and have a higher degree of manual dexterity at an earlier age because their minds have not been assaulted by the neurotoxins that most “normal “ children receive. Furthermore, unvaccinated children stand a much better chance of avoiding disease, especially if at arrival they are breastfed and as they grow are given whole organic raw fruits & vegetables on a daily basis. Since their immune system has not been altered, assaulted, or tampered with their bodies have been allowed to gradually build up a natural defense against sickness through slow exposure over time in life to bacteria. Not bombarding and swamping their bloodstream and vital organs with a massive amount of shots beginning at birth and continuing on from 2 months through early childhood and into adulthood in the form of flu shots is vital to their quality of life. You must also know that vaccines are a very powerful neurotoxin and have been associated with many neurological disorders such as paralysis, convulsions, ADD, hyperactivity, autism, mental retardation, depression, anxiety, paralysis, Guillan-Barre Syndrome (muscle weakness & paralysis), dyslexia, deafness, blindness, and SIDS (sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Vaccinations lower IQ as well as contribute to the evident mental disorders and neurological diseases listed here. The relationship between vaccinations and neurological diseases has always surfaced in medical articles ever since the arrival of mass vaccination programs. Autism was unheard of before vaccinations, and ADD and learning disorder in children are now being traced to childhood vaccinations. Most importantly, brain damage is by far the most common adverse reaction associated with vaccinations, although their actual numbers are not often reported correctly. Receiving shots does not prevent us from getting sick. Even children who have been fully vaccinated have still ended up contracting the diseases and sicknesses that they were given shots for. Medical literature documents a surprisingly high incidence of vaccine failures in vaccinated populations for measles, mumps, small pox, influenza, and polio (which the vaccine is still administered for even though it has been almost entirely eradicated in the world). Vaccines never have been what eliminated deadly diseases in history. Good diet and hygiene are responsible for that and continue to be so, although it is very hard for all of us to live by today because of all of the industrial/ environmental conditions we are exposed to and the corporate poisons pushed upon us for profit such as soda, candy, ice cream, cookies, cakes, fried foods, dead meats like pork & beef, fast foods, and drugs (alcohol, cigarettes, etc.) that are consumed. Believe me, choosing not to vaccinate my children has made us often have to go without comfort foods and be highly responsible with what we choose to buy and bring into our home for our children to eat because we know that their health and well being ultimately resides with us and not the government or private medical corporations. We chose to view sickness and how to cure it in a much different way. There is a fundamental problem with how sickness is approached by these entities. The media and traditional doctor’s office visits don’t help us when getting sick is always seen as a weakness instead of a way of building up our immune system and eventually making us stronger. The reality of life is omitted when proper nutrition (the only way our body has to boost immunity) is devalued and belittled. Traditional medicine has been attacked too. For instance, plant medicine/herbs are seen as old-fashion and dangerous and any method of healing (curing) outside of Western based medicine is immediately attacked, joked about, mistrusted or discouraged. Why have we lost our connection to nature? We have been conditioned through the use of fear to believe that we cannot cure ourselves naturally. We’d like you to also consider that a much sinister reality is at play. Today huge drug corporations control the medical industry and their poisonous preventative measures for profit to keep us from getting sick is truly going about trying to be healthy in the wrong way. In fact, the major corporate vaccine producing companies like Baxter who make millions if not billions of dollars churning out poisonous cocktails in the form of shots are doing the entire world population a disservice. Knowing what I know now about vaccines, profit before people schemes, the military industrial complex being tied into vaccine production, and the history of depopulation methods and the purposeful poisoning of people of color such as small pox in Native Americans and Syphilis in Blacks, I would not hesitate to say that mass genocide for profit has been and is being conducted through vaccinations and we do not want to perpetuate this or be victims of it. To recap, it is vital to know that injection of toxic agents to produce health is not sensible at all. It is just as unnecessary as giving a laboring mother and her unborn child a drug to numb the natural pain of a healthy birth and then calling that drug “help” or “medicine” when it is not. Vaccines like drugs can change the body’s function and metabolism in many important ways, but none are for the better. Altering vital body functions are not beneficial to us. Decreased resistance is one of the risks associated with vaccines and the benefits of those vaccines hardly outweigh the cost. Health comes only by living a healthy lifestyle in accordance with nature and getting the proper nutrients the body needs. In this sense vaccines prevent health and cause death. Please do not be scared into receiving them! Misinformation is worse than no information! It is our body and our choice! With respect I ask that you please take the time to read this document. You will want to know about this and take it into consideration without setting it aside to get to it later or throwing it away if it becomes to challenging to your current awareness. I write today not only with you in mind but with our entire human family in my heart. Most importantly, this letter will be available to my two sons Kinan & Illimani in the future as a way of reaching out to them through writing to their family and community. With this letter and many of the others I have or will write to you over the years my children and all of our future generations will have firsthand knowledge from one who loves them on the issues we face and how I feel about all of the many complexities in our lives that they will face. They will have my thoughts and hopefully my example to measure up to other experiences and ways of seeing things that are or will be related to them. This is extremely important to me as their Father. I want them to know that through it all I did not use silence to try to protect me or our family. Silence will not protect any of us. They must know that I risked it all to pursue clarification. That by challenging our way of thinking with knowledge and some morality I summoned enough courage to be able to stand open and bare to criticism, being wrong, accused, judged, or even worse attacked, abandoned, and hated. All of these things can be damaging but nothing is more so than silence. Our measure will be in where we stand in moments of challenge and discomfort and our children should always know that we hold fast to all the principles of light during these times. I for one do not wish to fail them. With this in mind, I write not to destroy but to share in the wonderful tradition of all the great writers and thinkers in history who have used the pen to communicate to one another the need for continuous growth, change, and rebirth. Let's evolve!

On this Winter Solstice – the longest night of the year – our psychological tolerance for darkness is profoundly being challenged. It is a visionary time. It is a time that represents not only the pitch black of night, but also a seed of something that will unfold in the coming year. In this time, we pray for a future as great as our ancestors give to us, for their wisdom to see the prison we are constructing for ourselves, the graves we are digging. To be able to look around at all of the artificial constructs that separate us from nature and know that in the years to come they will be multiplied a hundredfold. A world without direct sunlight, with no fresh air, water, or natural food, can our spirits survive in such a world? The challenge and opportunity that is now is unprecedented. Being the leaders that we are I know that we can rise to the challenge and make the choice to respond appropriately.
December 21, 2012 is four years away and I’d like to take this moment to ask you if you have heard of or have been able to set time aside to study the book, “Maya Cosmogenesis 2012”? I ask this and write about this date because it is so important and connected to our lives and behavior. 2012 is fast becoming commercialized and becuase of this in ways many people are being misled as to the deep and profound meaning of our “date with destiny”. One good thing though is that people are asking questions. They want to know more. I hope that you take the time to read Maya Cosmogenesis 2012 by John Major Jenkins and any other books you will encounter on 2012. (There is a list at the end of this) Read them all. Take in every perspective because so many people are talking about it, writing about it, and attempting to find out exactly what it means and it would benefit you greatly to study and come to your own conclusions.
As for myself, in 1998 I was fortunate to have stumbled upon the work of John Major Jenkins. I was up very late listening to the radio and changing the dial when I heard the words “Mayan” and “calendar”. I tuned in and could barely hear over the static just enough to catch the end of an interview with the author. It was new and amazing information he was sharing about an end date, cosmology, calendrics, pyramids, and our Sun being reborn. I listened intently and then was absolutely astonished when he spoke of the Mayan Sacred bible the “Popol Vuh” because just the day before I had finished reading it in its entirety. It took me a good month to study this text, one of the last 3-4 holy scriptures the murderous Spanish priests didn’t destroy. I had much trouble understanding the text at the time because it was the very first real study I had made of our ancestral literature that uses mythological story form to relate and teach us all about astronomical phenomenon. But when Jenkins spoke that night everything became clear. All of the information I had taken in became understandable. He spoke of the Popol Vuh as the book, the sacred text written in the 1500’s that is the code or piece of many puzzles that tells about the date December 21, 2012.
The Popol Vuh is one of our creation stories. It is a piece of our biblical texts that encompasses the written form of our spiritual knowledge. How is it related to the Mayan Calendrical end date and Winter Solstice on December 21, 2012? You’ll have to study deeply both the Popol Vuh and Maya Cosmogenesis 2012 to know but it’s important in this letter to tell you that both teach us that we are in the midst of a universal change that is so profound that you would never believe what is taking place if you don’t make an attempt to study it. I’ll do my best for you here though with the hope that you’ll trust in what I’ve learned and my ability to be honest.
We are talking about nothing less than revolution. According to Maya science, prophecy, Maya time philosophy, cosmology, astronomy, architecture, mythology, and calendrics we are in the midst of the end of a 5,125 year time cycle. What’s more, is that our ancestors discovered this world age end date while observing and mapping a slow celestial cycle or cosmic shifting called the “precession of the equinoxes” which is the big word used to describe how the earth wobbles on its axis. While spinning, moving around the Sun, and wobbling, the earth through precession has been causing the celestial position of the December solstice sun to slowly approach the center of our galaxy better known among many names as: THE MILKY WAY- THE DARK RIFT- NUCLEAR BULGE – THE ROAD TO THE UNDERWORLD (OUR UNCONCIOUS) OR “XIBALBA BE” IN THE POPOL VUH – THE GALACTIC CENTER – THE WOMB OF OUR MOTHER – THE BIRTH CANAL – OUR GREAT SKY MOTHER – THE GOAL RING IN THE BALLGAME “TLAXTLI” – THE THRONE – OUR HEART.

This is a very rare astronomical process/ alignment that culminates in 2012. And it’s an alignment that happens only once in every 26,000 years! This 26,000 year cycle or world age represents a cycle of spiritual unfolding for humanity. It is in a sense a process of human spiritual gestation. As stargazers we were very in tune and interested in our orientation to the larger cosmos. We were/are Galactic Cosmologists who have developed a science and philosophy that exceeds anything yet encountered by western science. It is a science of cycles of time that we learned about by tuning in to and observing nature cycles, plant growth, the human life cycle, and the cycles of the planets. Through this we come to understand profound things about the processes that created beings go through. And we learn that the processes in the heavens reflect all of the processes on earth and the other way around too. It is the principal of – AS ABOVE SO BELOW or THE MICROCOSM REFLECTS THE MACROCOSM. This principal lies at the heart of and is the foundation of our worldview as INDIGENOUS THINKERS.
And it wasn’t primarily a sky/earth connection that sewed together our mind and body but also all of the inner dreams and visions of spiritual unfolding that happens on our planet is reflected in the outer universe in the cycles of the planets. This is one reason why we built our pyramids, temples, homes, and lodges oriented to the skies in very specific and mathematical ways. We were making a statement about the relationship between our architecture, our inner reality, and the larger universe. We designed to reflect the cosmic order and project our love of GOD within. In effect, we are the cosmos! Know that this is relationship. Not ego. It is self-sacrifice for power in terms you or I have been indoctrinated by Western minds to look down upon because it does not lead to the false power and status so many of us seek in our daily lives dressed up in a suit and tie mimicking the white Capitalist authoritarian patriarchal CEO who serves money and greed. These are the megalomaniacs whose ego has run rampant with extreme selfishness such that it blinds him/her to having a real connection and relationship to our true selves and others. The true self is an eternal/infinite source consciousness. So the struggle plays out: Limited consciousness vs. the eternal divine self from which we all spring. Which do you choose to work towards? How do we balance? How do we come back into right relationship with ourselves and decolonize our minds? We must reclaim our indigenous minds. Not annihilate but sacrifice the ego to make it transparent so that the eternal wisdom of the true self reflected in the cosmos can shine through. This is a core teaching embedded in the Mayan creation mythology and all Native original teachings. This is power. This is decolonization.
The colonizers changed our tribal perception of reality. They changed and altered the spiritual perception of reality and turned it into a religious perception of reality. Religious perception is about submission and obedience and authoritarianism. For example, they put our physical bodies on reservations and in Missions to break the mind and used curfews, fences, and slave labor to break the body. They disallowed us to live on our traditional diets of fruits, seeds, grains, and introduced the Cow, Pig, and Goat, alcohol, milk and other putrefying fast food substances that have created diabetes, heart disease, and cancers in all of our families today. Through their populare culture glamorized in the media they have created fashionable watches to wear and made us believe that the Gregorian calendar and method of keeping time was/is superior to our balanced and in sync cosmological sacred and solar calendars. They separate your head and body, make you believe that matter comes before energy, and that spirit is non-existent effectually shattering your heart and they call this power. But we know according to our original teachings that power is not a man made device or structure. Power is not a political, religious, or social system. That’s not power. These are systems of authority that lead to destruction and disunity. The reality of power is an entirely different reality, and that reality is US – human beings…the power of highly evolved human beings. And to be a human being, we have to connect to the reality of our relationship to power. We have to transform and renew and we are indispensable participants in this process of transformation. Free will! Can we live up to the responsibility of reclaiming our cosmological birth right? December 21, 2012 is upon us and the previous world age along with all of its behaviors are coming to an end. This chapter in the human experience is terminated. A great cycle comes to completion and challenges us to seize the opportunity to establish right relationship with the true self. It is our duty.
On December 21,2012 the cosmic solar father and the Galactic center, the heart of the cosmic mother will be united. We align with the alignment. We will be restored if we choose to sacrifice and surrender our attachment to limitation and the illusion of security, contentment, progress, or success under the Devil’s forms of unity and organization in its structures of false reality. We speak here of the Satanist’s because they are the historical roamers over land and sea who bring destruction and chaos. They are the atomic bombers, the mass murderers whose purpose in this plane of existence is to and has been to attempt to disrupt and destroy the earth and all love. They are the drugs and arms dealers, creators of private property, massive prisons, and The Corporation. They are the invaders of our DNA and cell structures, and the negative energy workers who profess that their reality of fear is the only reality. Their existence is a crime and they too are in touch with the astronomical fact that their time is up. They have always been in a crisis of connection with the eternal energy, the cosmic mother, the solar father, the galactic womb because of their way of acquiring and promoting the non-intuitive approach to acquiring knowledge. Their approach is external and based on satisfying their taste, touch, sight, smell, and hearing through the collection of data, graphs and charts, suits and ties, banks and land deeds. This is their relationship to the world and to power. It is this relationship to existence that has caused them to want to control and own everything they can. They are vain and extremely uncompromising. They are false rulers, controlling and deceiving humanity. They are the descendants of darkness whose egos try to rule and who create a backward upside down world. This is the ego believing it is the true center of the world. It is the story of the Fallen One.
Our prophecies tell us that this is an expected and predicted development that happens at the end of every great cycle or world age. The perennial teachings of all of the world’s great spiritual traditions teach us that at the end of the cycles vain egoism is the dominant paradigm ruling and ruining everything and almost everyone on the planet. Each forgets his/her true nature and eternal consciousness loses itself in the vicissitudes of mortal life disconnected from being in contact with the source. But, in the great mythic structure of time the lost consciousness comes around to remember itself with all of the help from the cosmos and gets reinitiated back into an awareness that instead of being lost in the limited state of egoism actually arrives in a deeper essence that is rooted in the eternal and infinite. This is redemption, salvation, rebirth, evolution! Unless, we refuse in our cemented minds, reactionary and stale emotions, and handicapped visions to humble ourselves and eliminate ego consciousness we will not survive or be truly at peace and connected in balance and love in 2012.
This is not some arbitrary belief system of a forgotten people. What we find through INDIGENOUS philosophy is the key to our holistic health. Our responsibility now is to remember and ultimately ACT. And after committing to remembering what we have been taught to forget and be ashamed of we must stay dedicated and honest in our attempt to be a new individual, community, parent, friend, lover, and reborn warrior organizing not for money, fortune, fame, microphone time, camera shots, or shallow recognition, but for true freedom and the return to the path of the true self our ancestors exemplified.
At this point you may be a bit dismissive of what I’m relating to you especially if you see the world through the Colonizers lenses. If you’ve even convinced yourself over many years and through adolescent rebellion that you’re an Atheist and call yourself one you may laugh at the thought of human behavior and existence being shaped and molded by cosmological energy and the position, motion, vibration, and weight of the planets. It’s okay. You don’t have to believe or confirm for it all to be taking place. You only have to look at the condition of your life and all of the relationships you have come into on this planet. Are you connected? Are you trying to be in touch with others in a real way and more importantly with your own soul, your pain and anguish, and with your past? In turn, are you in touch with our Mother Earth? Do you protect and honor her by planting trees, cultivationg love by growing food, saving water, reducing everything you consume and throw away? Do you wholeheartedly defend her right to exist? Can you work in unison with her or do you cement and build over her flesh, destroy her lungs by killing trees, pollute her womb by not recycling, reusing, and conserving? Do you use her plant medicine to prevent and cure sickness and dis-ease or do you vaccinate, swallow pills, and cut body parts out that speak to loud for your soul to hear? Do you make a ritual and ceremony with others using alcohol to feel good? What relaxes your unbalanced emotions and stress? Can you hunt in time of need to find your own food and properly use an entire animal for sustenance? Can you find your own water to quench your family’s thirst? What will you do when that inevitable day arrives under the Colonizer’s control when the stores close, banks shut down, police take to the streets, curfew’s are imposed, and all of the state provided energy to your home is cut? Will you remain an Agency Indian begging for hand-outs and rations, working within the structure and framework they establish to petition and redress grievances or will you rebel and encourage others to do the same? Can you fix things, use tools, and most importantly improvise or do you depend on and hire others to fix your leaky and lazy habits? Can you truly say today as leaders, role models, organizers, teachers, and community activists that your personal life reflects your public life and persona…(The microcosm/macrocosm – as above so below Maya/Indigenous time philosophy)? Or do you feel like you’re living 2,3,&4 lives?
It has been said that the true measure of a community is in the condition of its women. How are your daughters? Your wives, what men are in their lives and are you in touch with yourself enough as men to know and acknowledge that their relationship to and with men is a direct reflection of their feelings toward and for you? How are they able to get your attention as your offspring, negatively or positively? How are all of your grandchildren?

Is this your feeling or do you look upon your grandchildren/children as a burden, an income, a punishment for your own parental shortfalls with your own children? Do you strive to use gentleness and all of the other positive techniques you are happy to use with others in public and at work? Do you seek to punish, be vengeful, manipulative, or create guilt dependency in your relations?
In essence, what I am asking is are you ready and preparing for the completion of the circle, the galactic alignment, harmonic convergence, and REBIRTH! Are you on linear time or a circular thinker? Are you reaping well sown seeds in the evolutionary process of becoming or growing old, stale, burdened, spiritually handicapped, Godless, cemented and unmoving, reactionary, illogical, and a slave to your 5 senses? Let us pray together:

An amazing book that puts to rest all of the fear and loathing over the world coming to an end and all the professors of that idea.

7. The Hopi Survival Kit - The Prophecies, Instructions, and Warnings Revealed by the Last Elders. By: Thomas E. Mails. PLEASE READ THIS BOOK. i cannot stress this enough. This book shook me to the core and will always be a classic read in my library.

8. Return of the Bird Tribes - Ken Carey . Absolutely deep reading when you have already read all the basic material on indigenous thought processes.

9. Mitakuye Oyasin - "We are all Related" By: Dr. A.C. Ross...This book was given to me in the year 2000 by a person who i consider one of my spiritual mentors. He knew that it would help decolonize my mind and open up the path for me to begin my journey on the Red Road. I met Dr. Ross many years later and had a wonderful conversation with him about how his writings affected my soul. This book is a must for all young people.

10. Ancient Americas - Maya, Aztec, Inka & Beyond. By: Nicholas J. Saunders. This book and the next two i will list go good together.

11. Day of Destiny - John Mini. If you want an amazing understanding of the deep intracies and math of the Mexica Sun Stone, the cosmos, your body, electricity, medicine, chemistry, physics, etc. then find this book and you won't put it down!

Letter from Emiliano Zapata to Woodrow Wilson, President of the United States. General Headquarters of Yautepec, Morelos August 23, 1914. Mr. Woodrow Wilson, President of the USA. UU. of America. Washington. Dear Esteemed Sir: I have seen in the press statements you made regarding the agrarian revolution which for four years has been developing in this Republic, and with great surprise I became aware that in spite of the distance you have accurately understood the causes and aims of the revolution which has increased especially in the South of Mexico, a region which has had to suffer the most from acts of dispossession and extortion by the large landholders. That conviction that you sympathize with, the agrarian emancipation movement, leads me to explain to you regarding the facts and background of the press in Mexico City, which being dedicated to serving the interests of the rich and powerful, has always worked to deface with infamous calumnies before the rest of America and the world in order that the deep significance of this great proletarian movement would never become known. I'll start by pointing out to you the causes of the revolution that I lead. Mexico is still today is a country in full feudal epoch, or so it was at the outbreak of the 1910 revolution. A few hundred landowners have monopolized all the arable land of the Republic, from year to year they have been increasing their domains, which in order to accomplish they have had to strip the people of their ejidos or communal fields, and their modest parcels of individual inheritance. There are cities in the State of Morelos, for example Cuautla, which are lacking even land needed to dispose of their garbage, land which is rightly required for the development of the population. So it is that the landowners, by dispossession upon dispossession, today with this pretext, tomorrow with another, have been absorbing all properties that rightfully belong to and from time immemorial have belonged to the Indigenous Peoples , lands from whose livelihood and culture the Indigenous Peoples have drawn sustenance for themselves and their families. To realize this extortion, the land barons have used legislation which has been elaborated under their influence that has allowed them to take over vast tracts of land, with the pretextthat these lands are idle, or not protected by legally correct titles. In this manner, aided by the complicity of the courts and even worse acts of the sort, such as false imprisonment or forced consignment into the military, the small landholders are robbed, and the great land barons have become sole owners of the entire country. The Indigenous Peoplesnow disposed of their lands, have been forced to work on plantations for low wages and are forced to endure the extreme mistreatment of the landowners and their stewards or overseers, many of whom, being Spanish or the children of Spanish parents, consider that they are entitled to conduct themselves as if they live at the time of Hernán Cortés, in other words as if they were still the conquerors and masters, and that we the "peons" were mere slaves, subject to the brutal law of conquest . The landowner's position regarding the “peons” is exactly equal to that held by the feudal lord, the earl or baron of the Middle Ages, in regards to their servants and vassals. The Hacendado (Squire) in Mexico has at his will the complete person of “his peon". He may reduce him to prison if he likes, he may forbid the “peon” to leave the ranch with the pretext that there is debt that can never be repaid, being so ordered by judges whom the hacendado bribes, and then there are the prefects or "political bosses" who are always their allies. The landlord is truly the complete Lord of Life and Property without doubt, within their vast domains. This unbearable situation is from whence originated the Revolution of 1910 and which as primary principle and direction has intention to destroy the feudal regime and fight against the monopoly of land in the hands of a few. But unfortunately, Francisco I. Madero who coming from a wealthy and powerful family which owns large tracts of land in the north of the Republic, Madero naturally quickly joined with other landowners, and invoking the power of legislation (laws for the rich and favoring the rich) as an excuse, chose not to fulfill the promises he had made to restore the stolen lands to their rightful owners and destroy the overwhelming monopoly of the landowners, through the expropriation of these lands in the name of public interest and with corresponding compensation, if possession was legitimate. Madero failed in his promises and the revolution continued, mainly in the regions that had seen the greatest abuses and assaults by the hacendados, such as in the states of Morelos, Guerrero, Michoacan, Puebla, Durango, Chihuahua, Zacatecas, etc., etc. Then came the Coup of the Citadel, that is the effort made by the ancient Porfiristas and conservative elements of all shades to seize power again, for they feared that Madero would be forced one day to have to keep his promises. At that juncture, the campesino population became justly alarmed and revolutionary ferment spread with more force than ever, since the coup, followed the assassination of Madero, was a challenge - a true threat to the revolution of 1910. At this point the revolution encompassed the full extent of the Republic, and chastened by past experience, and I chose not to await final victory but instead began the distribution of land and the expropriation of the large estates. Thus as has happened in Morelos, Guerrero, Michoacan, Puebla, Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, Chihuahua, Sonora, Durango, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosi: in such a way that it can be said that the people have done justice for themselves, as the legislative process does not favor justice and given that the current Constitution is a hindrance rather than a defense or security for working peoples, and especially for the campesino communities. It was at this point that the Campesino Pueblos realized the need to break the old patterns of legislation, and seeing in the *Plan de Ayala* the articulation of their desires and the expression of the principles that should underpin the new legislative process, began to implement such a plan, as required by the supremacy of law and justice, and this is how revolutionaries throughout the Republic have restored the lands of the dispossessed peoples. They have divided up the monstrous estates and punished the eternal enemies of the people, the feudal lords, with confiscation of their estates, along with the caciques and chief accomplices of the dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz as well as the perpetrators and accomplices of the Coup of the Citadel. It is to be ensured, therefore, that there will be no peace in Mexico until the Plan de Ayala is raised to the rank of law or constitutional provision, and fulfilled across the entire country. This position is reference not only in terms of social issues, or the need for land redistribution, but also with regard to the political question, or the manner of appointing the interim president who must issue the call for elections and has to start the process of implementing land reform. The country is tired of impositions, Mexico no longer tolerates imposed masters or leaders, our desire is to take part in the appointment of our governors, and since the interim government should emanate from the revolution and in order to assure this, is logical and fair that these be true representatives of the Revolution, or the heads of the armed movement, who should carry out the appointment of Interim President. This is guaranteed by article twelve of the Plan de Ayala, in spite of the wishes of D. Venustiano Carranza and his circle of ambitious politicians, who propose that the Carranza step into the position of President by surprise, or rather, by a bold stroke of audacity and imposition. The only way to wisely choose the Acting President is through the collective conviction of the revolutionary leaders across the country. Only so can be presented a man who by his record and his ideas provide absolute guarantees, while with Carranza as an owner or shareholder owning large properties in the Border States, his imposition is a threat to the campesinos of the country, as he would opt for the same policies as Madero. His ideas are clearly identified, with the only difference that Madero was weak, while Carranza is man capable of exercising a most tremendous dictatorship, which would again provoke a formidable revolution, perhaps bloodier than those before. Therefore you will see, being that the Revolution of the South is a revolution of ideals, not of revenge or retaliation, that this revolution has committed before the country and before the civilized world, to a formal contract to provide full guarantees for the lives and interests of nationals and foreigners, before and after our victory, and I am happy to make you aware of this fact. This long exposé should confirm to you in your well-illuminated mind regarding our movement of Southern Mexico, and convince you that the vile, banal, and corrupt press of Mexico City has maligned my personality and that of my compatriots. May these notes better illustrate, along with the information which Messrs. Dr. Charles Jenkinson and Thomas W. Reilly will share with you, and who as kind visitors of this State, we have had the pleasure to offer our modest but gracious hospitality, and via whose kind conduct I send these lines. They call him “El Tigre” but he does not call himself that. He says that because his birthday lands on September 21 and that is the year of the Tiger in Chinese Astrology that it’s okay with him. They attribute sayings to him such as, “Tierra o Muerte” but he says that he does not advocate violence and never has. They want to make a movie about his life, the Alianza Federal de Pueblos Libre (Federal Alliance of Free Pueblos/People/Communities) and the land grant movement that he started that lead to a New Mexico courthouse raid on June 5, 1967 in Tierra Amarilla,NM where those who were fighting to preserve the basis of village communal life against centuries of land pirates, private and federal, moved in an organized manner and made arrests and leveled charges against the colonizer judges, politicians, and police. He laughs and says, “They want Mel Gibson to play me in the movie, no way hombre. I don’t like the script anyway. It has to be re-written.” Reis Lopez Tijerina is bigger than a Tiger. He’s in his mid 80’s but stronger than a bull, sits upright, looks you in your eye, and constantly pushes, taps, pulls, and slaps you on your arms and legs to get his point across and make sure that you’re listening good. Good enough to want to make you go out and make more citizen arrests or round-up occupiers and invaders of our land who still think that they have a god given right to be here and be squatting on earth that is not theirs. I asked him why they think this is so. He replied, “They are in trouble with God because they stole our land and put it on paper and signed their names to these crimes in the name of God in their constitution. You cannot use God’s name while you’re thieving from people. You will have to pay dearly for it. So God is and always has been on our side.” Where do we go from here Don Tijerina? “Mijo, figure out how to unlock the key to their grand deception and let everyone know.” What is that grand deception maestro? “That they profess to be the chosen ones, that they have always been the chosen ones. Expose this lie and let everyone in the world know that they, as the creators and executors of the atomic, hydrogen, neutron, and nuclear bombs, have deceived every single person into believing that they are the true children of God when in fact they are nothing but devils by nature that come from Babylonian blood. What is coming for them they cannot or won’t even be able to stop. They are in serious trouble especially around here in the Southwest and their greatest fear is guiding them in to furthering their oppressive behavior. That fear is that we outnumber them and they can do nothing about it. Our land will be united once again.” I could have sat and discussed the world and life with our great leader for the entire day and his wonderful and beautiful wife Esperanza would have allowed us to do so too. Without question she welcomed us over for our visit with the Jaguar. We took food and he took a quick bite, pushed it aside saying that he wanted to talk to us more than eat. Esperanza sat with us the entire time helping him at times to find some words that he needed to complete thoughts and get his point across. She knew exactly what he was saying and what he wanted to say at every moment. In an instant she would reach for papers, shuffle through folders, a file cabinet, and would pull books off of the shelf many times without him asking and would help him drive his point home to us about history. I wanted to hug her many times over and over again for helping to keep our revolutionary leader alive and healthy and for appreciating the fact that one day soon we may be without him and every second counts, every interview matters, every visit from people with genuine hearts will help spread and keep his example, his message to the world, and his fire alive for eternity. I was honored to be invited and welcomed in Don Tijerina’s home. Especially now at this time in history when our books are being banned, our teachers are being attacked, our children are being sent to war, being incarcerated, beat, killed, and separated from their mother’s and father’s. Especially at this time when every single one of our most educated, capable, and talented intellectuals and activist’s still refuse to do what only the great, courageous Jaguar did over four decades ago…..go right to the heart of the matter and deal with the question of stolen land and our right to it. Coward’s, every single one of them, cowards chasing their tales around in circles telling people to vote, to ask uncivilized parasitic invaders who killed 100 million indigenous people of the “Americas” and who continue to commit acts of genocide against our people for freedom and democracy, for a spot at their dinner table, for recognition in their system of exploitation, poverty, murder, and death. Don Tijerina, tomorrow is the anniversary of the Chicano Studies ban in Arizona. No worries. We will not let inactive vendidos lead our lives. We will remember. We will not forget that when everyone else was asking for a secure spot in the ranks of that illusive lie they call “the middle class” you were teaching us that all of us have a right to wealth through our heritage and that includes the thing that comes before all else, LAND. Dr. Seuss & Racism, Pt. II

Today marks the day in 1942 when the United States rounded up and interned 120,000 Japanese American citizens in twenty-seven prison camps because they were deemed a threat to national security by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the U.S. war department during WWII. On December 7, 1941 the Japanese attack that was allowed to happen on Pearl Harbor led directly to the U.S. declaring war on Japan the next day.
In line with the long history and tradition of racism used by those of European extraction who occupy America and many parts of the world to achieve dominance and control over others, Americans blamed the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Japanese espionage. In the midst of a massive concerted war effort fueled by racial hatred and hysteria Roosevelt immediately drafted and signed into law Executive Order #9006 which established and declared the west coast to be a war zone and for all “enemy aliens” to be removed. Hence, California was the location of the beginning of the almost instantaneous removal, round-up, and incarceration of hundreds of thousands of Japanese American citizens.
New Mexico was not exempt. From 1942-1946 the United States military operated two internment camps - one in Santa Fe, NM which held 4,555 men of Japanese descent and the other in Lordsburg, NM where Japanese, Italian, and German immigrants were held. Out of the two, the Lordsburg camp was the more notorious of the prisons known for intolerance, prisoner abuses, and death at the hands of guards. New Mexicans, every single one of us, should know this history and more importantly, that racism was the prime motivating factor which caused people all over the country to be conditioned to turn a blind eye, tolerate, mimic, and even demand that their government and military behave in a fascistic manner by attacking and imprisoning innocent Japanese Americans. Proof of this is when in 1988, Congress passed and President Ronald Reagan signed legislation which apologized for the internment on behalf of the U.S. government. The legislation said that government actions were based on “race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership.” In turn, the U.S. government eventually disbursed more than $1.6 billion in reparations to Japanese Americans who had been interned and their heirs.
A cursory glance of that time period, one of many dark moments in the history of the U.S, will bring us to the understanding that countless people in positions of influence and power played a major role in fanning the flames of racial hatred by using their work to further promote the false idea of world-wide white supremacy. One of those individuals who today is widely recognized and celebrated as a children’s hero and who in all of Grant County, New Mexico has recently been deified, is Dr. Theodore Seuss Geisel better known today as “Dr. Seuss”.
Geisel, as I like to call him, was from an upper class German family and had his early start as a Rockefeller employee. He was an advertiser for that great oppressive robber baron and multi-national corporation Standard Oil. More importantly, during WWII he worked as a propagandist for the U.S. war machine in the animation department of the U.S. Army and this is when he began to create some of the most hateful and racist cartoons against Japanese people that called for nothing short of their persecution, incarceration, and murder. In all, Geisel created more than 400 cartoons promoting war, racism, invasion, death, and xenophobia. (Google: “Dr. Seuss’s Racist Cartoons” for more like the example above)
Of course, this was not his only legacy and many Geisel celebrants, as a way of dismissing his racism, would point to the magnificent creations later in life he produced that helped millions of children enjoy learning to read. Moreover, they would say that in post WWII America he seemed to use the power of the pen to create literary and artistic works of art that denounced the Holocaust, discrimination, and other forms of violence. But, the damage had already been done and he regrettably had to go to his grave knowing that his promotion and participation in violence and racism during WWII without a doubt contributed to teaching and cultivating a general feeling in the hearts and minds of the U.S. population that war as a means of solving problems is not only justified but that firebombing Japanese communities and killing women and babies was needed, that unnecessarily dropping two atomic bombs on the people of Nagasaki and Hiroshima was a must, and that killing over 2 million Japanese and 56 million on all sides of the war was unavoidable.
Why do Grant County and other parts of the country go out of their way every March to elevate Dr. Seuss to God status while during Black History Month in February fail to do anything of major significance that would honor and recognize Dr. Martin Luther King’s life and legacy or any African American contributions to the history of the U.S. and world for that matter? My previous essay answered this question. However, the response to that critical analysis from countless Anglos afterward asking me “what I was prepared to do to help change the situation” was a reaffirmation to me that their racism is a definite matter of deep seated conditioning that makes them totally oblivious to their hate.
The question is not whether or not we are prepared to deal with racism. The question is whether or not whites are prepared to step forward in mass and end it. We have tried. But, When in almost every instance we petition, ask to include “main street” in the organizing of events, try to access funding, access education, access the use of facilities, or have teach-ins, classes, books, leaders, and cultural contributions sanctioned by mainstream society we are told no, strung along, or forever made to feel that our history is part of some focus group effort that is too subversive or not patriotic enough or inclusive enough to be worthy of an all out city effort. On top of that, you have in every community across the country an iron grip on finances, land, institutions, churches, federal funding, non-profits, the press, businesses, banks, food, and major resources all controlled and overseen in almost all cases by an interlocking network of whites on governing boards, councils, advisory groups, executive bodies, auxiliaries, and all other decision making positions where the outcome is always favorable to those who are privileged, owners, wealthy, connected, friends of bosses, non-confrontational people and who do not challenge, question, or try to change the established order of things. In this way, Anglos are just as oppressed as people of color and they just can’t see it.
I’ve come to understand that they have been conditioned by the Dr. Seuss’s of the world to believe that because of their skin color they are somehow better and superior to others and must always use direct aggression, passive aggression, and/or outright violence to prove it. That they are conditioned to believe that the English speaking people of the world have an absolute right to the power and control over all land and resources of other nations; conditioned to believe that they have a right to do anything to secure and maintain the privileges that are inherited across generations as a result of that power and control; conditioned to believe that their God is greater; conditioned to believe that their vision for humanity is the most pure and righteous; conditioned to believe that when Indigenous intellects like myself question their superiority complex and point to their history of colonialism and imperialism that I am foolishly blaming all white people for that or using reverse racism. Finally and most importantly, I have come to understand that they are ultimately conditioned to believe that because we question their behavior that we are the ones who have a problem, we are the ones who must come up with solutions to the neglect and social problems white supremacy creates, and we are the ones who must be responsible for our own anger at failing to break through so many solid militarized borders at every level of society, the world, and deep within the white soul that creates barriers to our success, our knowledge of one another, our peace, unity, our co-existence, and the progressive evolution of humanity that would create an existence never before seen on Mother Earth - an existence where Dr. Seuss, Dr. Martin Luther King, Cesar Chavez (whose birthday & national holiday is on March 31) and any other great contributors to the human experience are all shared and celebrated equally.

When Dr. Seuss's B-Day is More Important than MLK's, Something is Wrong

Today Silver City and I suppose in surrounding cities too everyone is in a festive mood. A drive through downtown this morning where ribbons and light pole decorations greet people drove home the point that if you’re not taking a moment out of your day to recognize and honor a wily cat who wears a funny hat and who can trick or treat you or trap and trip you with his verbal stew then you’re probably just not in the spirit of things. Today is Dr. Seuss’s birthday.
Reading is important no doubt and the truth is that Dr. Seuss does deserve recognition for his contribution to children’s literature – even if you don’t like green eggs and ham. But, this is not what is in question. What I’d like Grant Countians to think about today is why did not a mere month ago the entire county, every school, and all of those folks over in that ever more cliquish downtown area go out of their way to promote Black History Month? More importantly, on January 16, 2012 it was another Dr.’s birthday – Martin Luther King’s. During that time, the community did not experience the same amount of excited effort by all that is being put into celebrating the life of Dr. Seuss’s.
The month of February is Black History Month in our nation. In this month we reflect or are supposed to be encouraged to reflect upon great contributions that African descendants have made to our lives in the country and world. In February alone the poet and activist Langston Hughes was born as well as the great educator, writer, and orators Fredrick Douglass and WEB Dubois. February 21, 1965 is also the day that marks the assassination of Malcolm X.
There was no mention of any of this history in my child’s classes before or after MLK’s birthday and national holiday. During this time these important dates and more is what we set aside family time to study and teach to our seven and five year olds who attend schools in Silver City. The schools haven’t creatively and consistently integrated this history into the classrooms so we as parents have had to deliver. When Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday arrived in January we spent seven hours together on the computer learning about segregation, boycotts, sit-ins, demonstrations, voting rights, equality, standing up and speaking out, lynching’s, hangings, and murder. This was just a prelude in January that helped prepare my children for Black History Month in February.
We took it upon ourselves to teach our children this because no one in positions of power, no institutions charged with educating our children, and no Main St. decoration brigades took it upon themselves to do so for King or Black History Month. Today, they’ve posted happy birthday signs to Seuss in clear view on school poster boards and marquees, every teacher in every class will choose to read passages from Seuss’s books, video’s will be shown, popcorn will be eaten, and kids who forgot or who were not allowed to wear their dreamy-sleepy pajama wear to school at the behest of the entire school staff and administration’s blessing will cry and probably feel left out. Similarly, arts & crafts, poetry and costume contests will take place and children and adults who will spend countless hours dressing up and competing for cash prizes will be awarded for whipping themselves up and jumping head first into the “love the Cat in the Hat” madness. In the midst of this frantic frenzy we must remember that all of this would be even more special if Martin Luther King and Black History were given the same amount, if not more attention than Dr. Seuss and his cartoon characters.
When my 2nd grade son asked his teacher yesterday why this wasn’t so she replied, “because people can celebrate whatever they want to celebrate.” I think that this points to the heart of the matter. Anglos, especially those in positions of power, aren’t that ready and willing to put their heart and soul into teaching and honoring diversity and the history of contributions through struggle, sacrifice, and overcoming great odds that real life human beings have had to live through. But, they can in a massive way and city-wide effort comfortably celebrate a white author named Seuss and his Cat adventures because it is safe for them to do so. No matter how complex the verbal gymnastics of the Cat are, severe tongue twisting is less painful than having to pick scabs off of old wounds by recalling, remembering, and teaching about what whites in positions of power have and are still doing to persecute people in the world who are different than them. (Think nation- wide anti-Mexican legislation, exploitation, & the Arizona Mexican-American Studies & book ban)
Organizing a day or month of festivities that celebrates non-white greatness and the ability to overcome oppression does nothing to liberate Anglos from the shame and guilt they feel or would feel every time they have to think about their privilege, inherited money, wealth, and social status because of that privilege and sense of superiority passed on from one generation to the next. Maybe this is why European celebrations reign supreme every month of the school year.
By choosing to emphasize and elevate Dr. Seuss over MLK and even heroes such as Cesar Chavez, Anglos show their extreme inability to put an end to racism once and for all. Choosing to do the opposite would do just that and our little one’s impressionable minds and our earth would be the healthier for it. Instead, a sanitized version of history through the life of an imaginary cat in a twisted hat is intimately presented and joyfully celebrated while our history remains in the shadows. On Dr. Seuss’s birthday and sadly year round our great contributions to the human family and our existence on earth does not and will not rule the day.
